What's going on this week?

What a week! The art room has seen paint, colored pencils, elements of art, Picasso, as well as primary and secondary colors.

Students in grades K4 and K5 have been learning about the primary and secondary colors. During the first day of the project, students painted dots using only the primary colors. The second day, students used only the primary colors to create the secondary colors.
This week, students listened to the book "Mouse Paint", by Ellen Stoll Walsh. (What a great book!!!) In the book, three mice discover what happens when they mix colors together. After listening to the book, students started transforming their dots into their favorite animals. I saw primary colored monkeys, secondary colored snakes, as well as ducks, lions, and of course mice. Here are a few pictures of their progress...

Students in grades 1-6 are busy working on a brochure reviewing all of the elements of art. In recent weeks, students have reviewed color, line, shape, and form. This week students have been creating sections on their brochure about texture, value, and space.

Art Club has also been really busy this week. This month in Art Club, we are learning all about Pablo Picasso, in particular his Cubism works. Students are working on Cubism inspired portraits they are creating on canvas using acrylic paints.

Wow! Students have gotten so much done already and we have only been in school for a month! I can't wait to see what students do in the months to come :)

PTO Meeting

In case you missed it... last Thursday, September 20th, I presented the mosaics that students created during the 2011-2012 school year. After a visit by artist Kirkland Smith, I was inspired to do a collaborative project with students. Each class was given a landmark or building here in the city. Each class then created a list of important characteristics of their place. What would they tell people about their place? What is the purpose of their place? After the list was completed, students voted to decide the defining characteristic of their landmark or building. Together, students then created a list of how they would depict the defining characteristic in mosaic form. Once their design was chosen, students glued bead after bead, stone after stone until their class mosaic was complete. I am soooo proud how well students worked together. I am also very proud of the final mosaics. The students put sooo much work into them. Way to go!!!

We were also pleased to announce that these lovely mosaics we be in the auction in April. Below are just three of the eight mosaics. I am hoping in the coming weeks to get a few more pictures to post..maybe some close-ups! :)

P.S. Sorry for the bright windows! It was incredibly sunny Friday morning!

Hello to All!

Welcome to my blog!!! I have been following numerous art education blogs for some period of time and often considered creating my own. It wasn't until the other day when one of my second grade students was concerned about his parents not being able to see his artwork until after the art show we will have later in the school year, that I really put this blog consideration into action. This blog will act as a "behind the scenes" look into the art room, showing the beginnings of our projects, progress on projects and finally a look at the final unique creation. I am excited about the opportunity that students will now have to show anyone anywhere their amazing artworks! I can't wait to take a few pictures of our current projects to show off!
